Benefits of Swimming

When swimming water carries our body weight. This means that muscles of weight-bearing joints such as ankles, knees, and hip can move without the pressure posed by our body.

One of the main reasons of arthritis is excessive weight and the force it creates on the joints. Therefore, performing sports activities such as walking and running frequently and for long periods of time is not possible for people with arthritis. For this reason, swimming is the ideal for people with joint arthritis.

Swimming is a highly effective exercise for muscles around the spinal column. It activates several muscle groups at the same time. For example, biking addresses only the leg muscles while a swimmer activates the muscles in the back, legs, shoulders, and arms all at the same time.

Benefits of swimming are not limited to muscles and physical well-being.  Swimming provides mental relaxation and creates a feeling of calmness and relaxation much like a therapy. It enables burning off more calories by exerting less effort than many other exercise types. In this respect, it is a unique sport that provides physical and mental benefits not to mention that it is also fun.

Of course, there are some points to be noted while swimming. Patients with cervical disc hernia, for example, need to be more careful in the water. Therefore, if you have cervical disc hernia or similar conditions, you need to act upon your doctor’s instructions. People with shoulder issues should also take care while swimming as the movements in the water may well exacerbate present neck and shoulder problems rather than treating them.

It is always slippery around swimming pools and this constitutes risk of slipping and falling over. Falling over at swimming pools can lead to serious injuries. Therefore, patients seeking treatment and health in swimming should avoid reckless moves around swimming pools. A simple yet effective precaution would be wearing skid-proof slippers or trainers.

Unless you are a professional diver, you should not jump into water from heights. Always remember that there is a risk of paralysis in the event of an undesired accident.

Another issue to consider is hygiene. Unsanitary conditions at the seaside and particularly in swimming pools can leave you susceptible to numerous infectious diseases. A common example to such diseases is urinary tract infections, which are particularly observed in women.
